How to Secure Your Telegram App — Before It's Too Late

1. The Voicemail Code Attack

When someone enters your phone number into Telegram on their own device, Telegram sends a login code to your phone via SMS. The hacker cannot see that code, but they can click a button on their screen that says "Didn't get the code? Send via phone call." Telegram then calls your number and leaves the login code in your voicemail. If your voicemail PIN is weak or still set to the carrier default, the hacker calls your voicemail from any phone, retrieves the code, and logs into your account. You never knew it happened.

3. Phishing and Fake Telegram Support

You receive a message from what appears to be an official Telegram Support account warning that your account has been flagged or is about to be deleted. The message is urgent. It directs you to click a link and verify your identity immediately. The link leads to a fake Telegram login page that looks identical to the real one. You enter your number, receive a genuine Telegram code on your phone, enter it on the fake page, and the hacker takes over your account instantly. Telegram Support will never message you first and will never ask for your login code. If anyone claiming to be Telegram asks for a code, it is a scam.

Enable Two-Step Verification — Do This First

Open Telegram, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, and enable Two-Step Verification. This adds a password requirement on top of any login code. Even if a hacker retrieves your voicemail code, completes a SIM swap, or tricks you into entering a code on a fake page, they cannot access your account without your password. This single setting stops all three attacks.

Secure or Disable Your Voicemail

Call your carrier and set a strong voicemail PIN, not the default, not your birthday. If your carrier allows it, disable voicemail entirely. No voicemail means no code to steal.
